Camp Oven Cooking Competitions

Cook the food or judge the food - which side are you on?

It may come as no surprise that camp oven cooking is massively popular in Australia, but even we were shocked to discover just how much interest in this pastime has proliferated across the internet in recent years. A quick search of social media produced no fewer than 17 Facebook groups dedicated to cooking on camp, with the largest - Australian Camp Oven Recipes An Tips - boasting just shy of 350,000 members!

So we know there are a lot of camp oven cooks out there and we’re also pretty sure many of you are keen to share, or might we say ‘show off’ your favourite recipes?? Well we have the perfect platform for you! Think of it as a kind of My Camp Oven Kitchen Rules, set in the beautiful natural surrounds of Nymboida Camping and Canoeing and without the snooty judges. Indeed, alongside a small invited judging panel, the People’s Choice judges are made up of festival-goers just like you.

The first competition involves preparing Breads Dampers & Scones in two categories: sweet and savoury. The second competition is the Evening Meal and is contested in three categories: wet (e.g. stews, casseroles), dry (e.g. roasts, bakes) and desserts.

The competitions all take place on Saturday 12th June and as well as getting your name on one of the perpetual trophies, there are cash prizes to be won! Read all the details and sign up for your spot on our website.

Whether it’s bacon wrapped lasagne or lamb shanks in port wine & garlic, it seems there’s no end to the culinary delights that can be perfected in a camp oven on a wood fire. And if you’re looking for recipe inspiration or tips on how to get the best out of your camp oven kit, we also have two specialists on site, ready to entertain your taste buds. Look out for demonstrations by Ranger Nick and Kingbrown Camp Oven Kitchen throughout the festival.
